Ultra-Gravity Heavy

Last night we went and caught a documentary about the Golden Gate Bridge called The Bridge. Um...yeah. Talk about depressing/heavy! It was a super powerful film about the Golden Gate Bridge and how people consider it an honor to commit suicide on this landmark. The crew set up cameras for about a year and filmed it EVERY day. They caught about 24+ deaths on film. It was super surreal to see a wide angle shot, then a small splash in the water. What's more, they'd zoom in on people that were talking on their cell phones, or crying their eyes out, then, they'd literally just hop over the edge. The camera would follow them down to the splash. Out of respect they kept it non-graphic, in that they didn't show the actual bodies afterwards. Throughout the film they interviewed people that knew the jumpers and how they felt about the bridge itself. It was really heavy. Really puts stuff in perspective when you think things are as low as they can get...then you see these folks with super-deep problems and makes you feel very lucky and/or fortunate that you're not suffering like them. It puts your pain to the side and makes you want to reach out to help since you realize your shit isn't as troubling as theirs. EEK...what an eerie film. SUPER powerful though.

Amy made a good point that she would have tried to break it up by interviewing a few of the bridge cops, the coast guard guys that pick the bodies up, and/or the guys that are on the brige painting/repairing 365 days a year. Instead it was one depressing story after another. There was one guy that jumped and survived! Now that was trippy. Also, they caught a guy reaching over the bridge rescuing a woman that was about to jump. He was taking photos, then realized what she was doing. He grabbed her by the collar and yanked her back over. His interview was pretty cool. The craziest thing is that they caught it ALL on tape. It wasn't shot like COPS or one of those "Chase" shows, but rather in a really "artful" way.
