On the eve of the 2007 Giro, I hereby declare my pick for the final podium:
1. Gilberto Simoni
2. Paolo Salvodelli
3. Damiano Cunego
*4. Danilo DiLuca
Here's why:
1. Simoni is hungry for his 3rd. He was the only one to hang with Basso last year on the final weeks climbs...Plus, he's got experience in them thar hills! His weakness includes his timetrailing though. He has worked on that in the offseason, and, would love nothing more than to beat Cunego.
2. Salvodelli can TT which is what will help him maintain/gain valuable seconds on his rivals. Other than that, it's a crap shoot for these guys in the hills
3. Cunego is a fragile guy, but, like Simoni, has been honing his TT skills and is VERY hungry. He's smokin' on his recent wins, whereas Simoni hasn't won much in a while. Don't hold that against Gibo though!
4. Diluca can't TT and I think that will hurt him. Also, when it gets REALLY steep, he's going to suffer. He's more of the classics guy with roly-poly courses vs the monsters they're going to face in the last week.
