Well today I got lucky again and was able to get out for an hour to do some exploring of the roads near Carrboro. I'd done some research on motion based and google earth looking for ride routes and what not, so I was about 20% familiar with where I was going. The street names all made sense, but without mountains to the west it's hard to get any sort of bearing!
I did a short 1 hour loop that consisted of beautiful farm country rolling hills and mid 70s the wind kicked up a bit here and there but it was a gorgeous day. There were very few cars on the roads, and when they were around, they were pretty courteous and gave me ample room when they passed. definitely a great experience for a first ride in a new place (yesterdays doesn't count!)
Back when I was racing, I had problems with certain types of efforts...mainly those very short ones up a steep hill. I. could do a tt no problem, a road race, a crit, and feel solid on Frank's pan. However the shorter steeper hills (like a paved version of the Koppenburg in the aca race) we could do three and four minute efforts until the cows came home....but for me it was a mental thing when my cadence dropped so significantly so quickly because of the grade/etc. based on today's geographical features, i should be bale to conquer my demons with most of the routes here. there are a lot of steep little hills peppered throuht the numerous false flats. should be fun! I've been turning a bigger gear up the false flats and trying to do some shortish efforts to stimulate my anaerobic system and kick start my metabolism as well. feels good because I'm breathing harder at the finish and often have to coast down the backside of the rise to recover. it's going to be fun to eventually incorporate some structure in things in the coming weeks.
I followed up the ride with a great salad full of leafy greens and other veggies. losing weight is paramount for me, so starting out right is crucial!
ride time: 1hr 6 minutes

There is no luck. Only good planning and nice green salads.
